Speaking and listening awards:

SBA TA  ESOL Step 1 and Step 2 awards are tailored for adults aged 16 and over residing in the who have begun learning English but are not yet prepared for an ESOL Skills for Life Entry Level qualification.

These speaking and listening exams offer students a chance to track their learning while developing the skills and confidence necessary to pursue ESOL Skills for Life qualifications.
Assessments are conducted at SBATA  and can be taken on demand, aligning with the schedule of availability. 

 

What learners achieve at this level:

Learners who have achieved a Step 1 or Step 2 award can:

  • Understand what is said clearly, slowly and directly in simple everyday conversation with support

  • Communicate simple information on familiar matters

  • Use basic sentence patterns and simple phrases about themselves, places and other people

Units available:

The ESOL Skills for Life qualifications are an exciting opportunity, comprising 3 units that earn credits and lead to standalone award-level qualifications! When learners complete all three units at the same level, they proudly achieve an 'all modes' ESOL Skills for Life qualification at the certificate.

  • Speaking and listening
    Conversation with an examiner – 2 tasks – 5 minutes
    Group discussion with an examiner – 1 task – up to 4 minutes

  • Writing
    Controlled exam – 3 tasks – 30 minutes

  • Reading
    Controlled exam – 24 questions within 3 tasks – 45 minutes

Units available:

ESOL Skills for Life qualifications consist of 3 units, each carrying credits that contribute to standalone award-level qualifications. When a learner successfully completes all three units at the same level, they will receive the 'all modes' ESOL Skills for Life qualification at certificate level. This achievement reflects their proficiency across various skills essential for effective communication in English.

  • Speaking and listening

  • Conversation with an examiner – 3 tasks – 8 minutes
    Group discussion with an examiner – 1 task – up to 5 minutes

  • Writing
    Controlled exam – 3 tasks – 50 minutes

  • Reading
    Controlled exam – 24 questions within 3 tasks – 60 minute

When a learner successfully completes all three units at a specific level, they receive an 'all modes' ESOL Skills for Life qualification at certificate level. This structured approach ensures learners gain essential skills while achieving recognized qualifications in their language journey.
